Message from IRC Turlock - December 2024

As the Community Engagement Manager at IRC Turlock, I work with the local community to provide a warm welcome to newcomers starting their lives in the US.  Furnishing and stocking hundreds of apartments each year is no small feat and we don’t do it alone. We collect new and used household items, new bedding, hygiene and cleaning supplies, furniture and more from the local faith based organizations, community clubs, individual donors and ethnic based charitable organizations. Last year we raised over $300,000 dollars in donated items for newcomers.

This winter we are expecting a high number of arrivals which produces its own unique challenges. The primary challenge is housing. Families stay in hotels until permanent housing can be found, usually just a few days. We anticipate longer than average hotel stays due to the lack of affordable available housing during the winter months. We are always accepting referrals for landlords and property management companies willing to work with newcomers. To donate to our soft landing fund and help newcomers with their hotel stay, first month rent and down payment check out our website at //www.rescue.org/turlock  Please contact Odsin.Mirza@rescue.org  for more information.

In Turlock there is only one hotel with kitchenettes and space is limited which provides an additional challenge. It is vital that newly arrived families have groceries and the ability to cook food while they wait for permanent housing. IRC is currently collecting and distributing new and used electric tea kettles and slow cookers and shelf stable foods to meet this need. To donate contact Jocelle.burdett@rescue.org or check out our website for more information.
