  • Our mission at Osborn Two-Way Immersion Academy is, “Empowering global citizens to achieve linguistic and academic excellence.”  Our mission is just nine words, but the meaning behind them is powerful.

The most obvious feature of our mission is “linguistic excellence,” which is a fancy way of saying that we support our students in becoming literate and fluent in two languages—English and Spanish. For over 25 years Osborn has provided students with a two-way immersion program.  In two-way immersion students learn academic content as they acquire language. By carefully designating when each language is taught, and for how long, we are able to ensure our students meet our goal of being able to understand, speak, read, and write in both Spanish and English by the time they leave Osborn at the end of fifth grade.

Secondly, our mission states that our students will “achieve academic excellence.”  We have the same high expectations, that our students will master grade level standards, as all other schools in the state of California. Even though all of our students are language learners, as they are taught academic content in two languages, we still have the expectation that they are able fully master the exact same reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science standards as their peers in schools that teach only in English.

Finally, and perhaps most important, our mission states that we are about, “empowering global citizens.” As a school that explicitly teaches students to communicate in two languages, we are all about engaging with people with different cultures, backgrounds, and identities.  As global citizens we see ourselves as a part of a world community that is becoming ever more connected through technology, economically, and ecologically.  But even as we think of ourselves as a part of a global society, we do not drop our own identity as citizens of our country, our ethnicity, or identities.  In fact, we teach our students to take pride in their own identities, even as they celebrate the diverse identities of others. We want our students to grow up to become confident and kind adults.
