Volunteer Information

Welcome Volunteers!

Turlock Unified School District values the partnership of parents, guardians, and community members who volunteer their time to support students. To ensure the safety of all students while making volunteering accessible, TUSD uses a three-level system for volunteer screening. Each level is based on the type of contact the volunteer will have with students, ranging from minimal interaction to direct, unsupervised involvement.

Volunteer Levels

Level I

Level I Volunteers help on a very limited basis and always under the supervision of a TUSD employee.
Examples include:

Observing in the classroom with permission from the teacher; or
Direct student contact, such as assisting small groups of students, for one (1) hour or less per month; or
Supporting special events or presentations with intermittent student contact less than four times per year.

Process for Level I Volunteers:

Simply sign in at the school office and confirm the nature of the visit with the office staff prior to volunteering.

Level II

Level II Volunteers have regular interaction with students and always under the supervision of a TUSD employee.
Examples include:

Direct student contact, such as assisting small groups of students, for one (1) hour or more per month; or
Support that involves intermittent student contact more than four times per year; or
Chaperoning a study trip.

Process for Level II Volunteers:

Complete a Level II Volunteer Application and sign at the school site;
Provide a photo ID for the school to copy;
Provide TB clearance through screening;
The site administrator will complete a background check through

Level III

Level III Volunteers are individuals who may have unsupervised contact with students
Examples include:

Serving as an intern (special education, counseling, youth ministry, etc.); or
Sorting students during an overnight school-sponsored event; or
Driving students as part of a school activity (after completing required driving clearance); or
Any other role where a TUSD employee is not present at all times.

Process for Level III Volunteers:

Visit the District Office to complete the Level III Volunteer Packet;
Submit a Volunteer Application and provide a photo ID;
Provide TB clearance through screening;
Obtain a Fingerprint Request Form from the District Office and complete DOJ/FBI background checks (fees apply);
Complete the online Mandated Reporter training (as directed by Human Resources);
If driving, Human Resources will submit your information to the District Transportation Department for review; and
Follow school site check-in procedures when volunteering.

Notes

TUSD site administrators are ultimately responsible for determining and completing the appropriate level of screening for school volunteers at the school sites. Some additional notes include:
TUSD employees and TUSD students (e.g., CTE students) volunteering do not need to complete the volunteer application process. The school only needs to verify employment through Human Resources or the school site to verify enrollment.
CSUS students and Volunteer Coaches follow separate procedures.
When transporting students, adult passengers (such as spouses or friends) are not permitted unless they have completed the TUSD volunteer clearance process. Minors may ride along.
