Reading Screener
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, all schools in California will screen students in grades K-2 to help identify those who may be at risk for reading difficulties in compliance with Education Code 53008. TUSD students in grades K-6 will be screened using Amplify mCLASS DIBELS 8/Lectura, which the TUSD Board adopted on April 15, 2025. The goal of this assessment is to identify any challenges early on, so we can provide the proper support at the right time, which research shows makes a significant difference in a child’s reading success.
Students will have an initial screening assessment, which takes approximately 8-10 minutes to complete, between October 6 and 17, 2025. Two additional screeners will be administered over the course of the school year, with the midyear assessment scheduled to occur January 12-23, 2026, and the end-of-year assessment scheduled to occur May 11-22, 2026. You will be notified of the results of the initial screening within 45 days, which coincides with parent-teacher conferences. You will receive details about any next steps or follow-up, if needed.
If a student is flagged for risk, it doesn’t equate to a diagnosis. It simply indicates that they are not yet where they need to be in terms of the literacy skills expected of them at that time. This provides our teachers with information about your child as a learner that will help them tailor instruction to meet their needs. This may look like any of the following:
- Supporting students in the general ed class with a small group that focuses on targeted skills with their classroom teacher.
- Supporting students in the intervention classroom with a small group that delivers further intensified instruction with a trained interventionist.
Opt-Out Option: Screening enables us to support our students’ needs better and catch them before difficulties arise. However, if you would prefer to opt out of this screening, please notify your school office by September 19, 2025.
We are excited about this new effort to support early readers and are here to partner with you every step of the way. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or the school office.
